Tuesday's Election Results
Summary
The Ward 3 council race was focused on growth and redevelopment
issues. There is a growing frustration in Ward 3 over the lack of
redevelopment along the Wisconsin Avenue corridor and extreme frustration
from many residents with the small, but vocal set of anti-growth
people who have derailed good planning processes. The Northwest
Current even noted that many of the 9 Ward 3 candidates were running
away from a “No-growth” label.
Mary Cheh’s overwhelming victory in a race with 9 candidates
shows the depth of support for redevelopment along Wisconsin Avenue.
Cheh supports transit oriented development, more affordable housing,
and good redevelopment along Wisconsin Avenue. Despite smear attempts
by anti-growth activists, Cheh’s message clearly rallied voters.
She received more votes than the next 4 candidates combined.
Marc Fisher, Washington Post Columnist, noted that her overwhelming
victory sent a clear message that Ward 3 voters want to see their
part of the city accommodate more housing, job and retail growth.
People believe that redevelopment offers opportunities. Based on
outreach to residents on redevelopment issues, the election results
are not surprising. A common refrain when talking to residents about
transit-oriented development and redeveloping Wisconsin Avenue and
is: “Some of the action taken to halt all development has
represented an enormous setback to efforts that clearly will make
this area a better place to live.”
